Different vacuum cleaner manufacturers often quote the suction power in different terms - these terms are:
- Water, suction or vacuum lift in pascals (pa) or in inches of water
- airflow in cubic feet (CFM) or litres per second
- air speed in miles per hour or metres per second
When comparing vacuum cleaners it is important to compare like-with-like figures to ensure that you are making a fair comparison.
There are a number of myths about vacuum cleaners:
1. Cyclonic-based vacuum cleaners do not use filters - this is not true. The cyclonic effect does not collect all the dust and even the most advanced cyclonic vacuum cleaners have a filter to catch the dust that is not collected. This filter will block and will require changing.
2. The more amps, the better - not necessarily. Assuming that a vacuum cleaner is more powerful because it uses more amps is like saying that a car is more powerful because it uses more fuel. What matters is the design and the filtration system.
3. A vacuum bag is a vacuum bag - the larger the surface area of the filter, the longer that suction can be applied and therefore the better filtering.
4. Suction is the be all and end all - not true. There are a number of elements that make a truly effective vacuum cleaner. Airflow, lift, filtration and design - a combination of those elements are required to make the most effective vacuum cleaner.
