There are a number of formats in which vacuum cleaners are available:

Upright vacuum cleaners - These are usually a taller unit sometimes with a detachable head. The bag is integrated into the main unit and they usually run on wheels to make movement easier. The most common form of head design is a beater bar or rotating bushroll which sweeps and shakes the debris into the air stream. To create the actual air stream (or vacuum) there are usually two methods - the first method, which is not often used these days is the direct air or dirty air and the second method is indirect or clean air. Direct air cleaners are efficient at generating good airflow from relatively low power but they lose suction over long hoses. Most modern upright vacuum cleaners use the indirect air method as it is more efficient all-round given the increased power of modern upright vacuum cleaner motors.

Cylinder vacuum cleaners - These types of vacuum cleaner are usually connected via a hose to a unit that incorporates the filter, motor, etc on a smaller, lighter wheeled casing. Although upright vacuum cleaners are generally more effective due to the larger, more complex head the flexibility of cylinder vacuum cleaners makes them more popular.
